      Red Ear Slider Water/Food Questions?

      Saturday, December 4th, 2010

I bought a Red Ear Slider around 2 days ago. he is 4 inches long and is a male. I was wondering about the water temperature inside his aquarium i have a floating thermometer that sticks to the wall inside it and it always reads 78-81 i looked up and they say that’s a prety good temp but dose he like cooler or hotter water? Also i am planning on buying a heater/one of those things that keeps the water at the same temp through out the day which one do you guys reccomend that dose the job good and dosen’t leave me broke the only one i have seen online and at Petsmart and PetsCo is a very bad one people say it dose not work and even someone said it blew up in there tank. Also i am going on a out of town 3 day trip in a few weeks and i was wondering what i can put in his tank that he can eat while im away i already have a cuttlefish bone inside the tank but he seems to not like it very much or he just hasen’t found out what it is yet. I’ve seen those blocks of stuff for fish at the stores and i was wondering if they make those for the turtles to eat. Also would i be able to put vevgetables in there or will they get nasty and old after a few hours?
My turtle has opened his mouth under water 2 times he opens it pretty wide someone said that he might be yawning but i wanted to make sure that thats what he’s doing hes only done it 2 times one at around 5:00 O’clock and around 11:35 O’clock.
One more thing how do turtles sleep? do they sleep on the rock which they bask on? or do they sleep at the bottom of the tank if so they won’t drown? and if they sleep on the basking rock mine won’t stay on it he never sits on it and when i put him on it he only sits on it for about 5 seconds then he jumps off into the water.
Please answer my questions and give me some pointers and what i should do and what not to do this is my very first time having a turtle so i don’t know much about them.
Also please provide links to the water heaters that you think are good and even if they are pricey put it up i wouldn’t mind spending money on something that i know will help my turtle.
      Thanks!

      How to grill a fish?

      Saturday, October 23rd, 2010

Salmon are well-known for two things: swimming upstream, and being delicious. A well-prepared salmon filet at a barbeque can lighten up an entire afternoon, and turn you into the hero of the hour. Thankfully, there is no one single way to prepare this fish: a barbequed salmon is a fish of many flavors, all of which are quite enjoyable. ShopEasyPro provide cooking tips. We suggest you to use kitchen thermometer to measure the temperature.

      Science Diet Dog Food?????

      Friday, September 3rd, 2010

My 2 year old female westie has horrible allergies and we completed allergy testing a year ago. She was then put on prescription food from the vet that was VERY expensive (/10 lb. bag!). She stayed on it for a while and the doctor said since she was doing fine, I could swap to different food from a pet store and he gave me a list of what she could have. I chose Science Diet. She hasn’t had any problems with it but…I noticed lately her breath is starting to stink really bad and I brush her teeth once a week or every two weeks, so that shouldn’t be it. She is also shivering occassionally. Yes, it’s cold outside but she’ll shiver for no reason sometimes. Most of the time though, she’s extremely active and outgoing. Also, I have a pet ear thermometer at home and she’s not running a fever for a dog. Could these 2 things have anything to do with the dog food? Or something else? Thanks for any help.
Thanks for the answers. She’s allergic to beef, fish, and deer. Pretty much rules out everything but chicken. ugh. Also, I’ve asked the vet about her yearly cleaning and he said he didn’t think she needed it done until she was 3 years old. That’s kinda weird isn’t it?
@cjrossi-they sent off the allergy test somewhere else and that place sent back a list of foods that were compatible. It’s science diet lamb meal and rice. I’ve heard bad stuff about it though, after I’ve started it. Ugh!
I just made an appt with the vet in about an hour just to check things out. I wish we could let her chew bones. That may be our problem. She tends to swallow them whole and we had to induce vomiting a few months ago, due to her doing that. Crazy dog! haha

Will Adding Fish Food in my Tank Help Speed Up Cycling Process?

      Saturday, August 28th, 2010

I have just gotten a new ten gal tank with:

      Hood
      Lights
      Fish Food
      Tank Conditioner (Tetra AquaSafe)
      Api StressCoat+/Stress Zyme+
      Heater
      Thermometer
      Filter with cartridge.

I have filled up the tank, installed the filter and heater, placed two live plants in there, and turned it on. Currently, the water is conditioned with the Api StressCoat, the filter is running smoothly, and the heater is currently not on (the tank is 88 F, I want it to cool down). I have placed some of the old gravel from my old tank into with the new gravel, also a decoration. Also, I have added a few pinches of fish food in there.

I was wondering, would fish food, as it broke down, would release ammonia, therefore letting the plants absorb some, would help aid my tank in cycling? I have not placed any fish in there, having done my homework. I do not have access to pure NH3, and my resources from my old tank are very limited (it is a 1.5 gal tank, with my current fish I plan to transfer in). Also, I plan to get the testing kits tomorrow. How often should I test the water?
Thanks for the information. And yes, I did do my research. xD

The temperature is slowly dropping. Now it’s around 85 F, and I’m waiting for it to be 10 degrees lower. I’m sure by tomorrow morning or later on, it will cool off enough for me to turn the heater back on.

Are the silvery baubles in a thermometer mercury?

      Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

If so, my thermometer was found broken with all these missing. I had noted my fish being a little lethargic lately – abd lost a Krib y’day (he looked perfect on removal – no marks completely intact) today I found my Dwarf Gourmai – same again perfect looking and this afternoon my Kissing Gourmai. I have a 3ft tank and have changed about 5 buckets ( 1/4 tank). I have also bought a special filter – but can I expect to lose lots more as they are really lifeless and no appetite – even live food! It seems especially to have affected my angels, loaches & remainding kribs and gouramis – HELP – Please ;o)

Tip: Cover the batter with plastic wrap and let it sit at room temperature for an hour. This will help the batter stick to the shrimp. Step 2: Peel the shrimp Peel the shrimp, leaving the tails on. Step 3: Devein the shrimp Make a shallow cut along the back of each shrimp with the tip of a sharp knife. Remove the vein under running water with your fingers or with the knife.
