I bought a Red Ear Slider around 2 days ago. he is 4 inches long and is a male. I was wondering about the water temperature inside his aquarium i have a floating thermometer that sticks to the wall inside it and it always reads 78-81 i looked up and they say that’s a prety good temp but dose he like cooler or hotter water? Also i am planning on buying a heater/one of those things that keeps the water at the same temp through out the day which one do you guys reccomend that dose the job good and dosen’t leave me broke the only one i have seen online and at Petsmart and PetsCo is a very bad one people say it dose not work and even someone said it blew up in there tank. Also i am going on a out of town 3 day trip in a few weeks and i was wondering what i can put in his tank that he can eat while im away i already have a cuttlefish bone inside the tank but he seems to not like it very much or he just hasen’t found out what it is yet. I’ve seen those blocks of stuff for fish at the stores and i was wondering if they make those for the turtles to eat. Also would i be able to put vevgetables in there or will they get nasty and old after a few hours?
My turtle has opened his mouth under water 2 times he opens it pretty wide someone said that he might be yawning but i wanted to make sure that thats what he’s doing hes only done it 2 times one at around 5:00 O’clock and around 11:35 O’clock.
One more thing how do turtles sleep? do they sleep on the rock which they bask on? or do they sleep at the bottom of the tank if so they won’t drown? and if they sleep on the basking rock mine won’t stay on it he never sits on it and when i put him on it he only sits on it for about 5 seconds then he jumps off into the water.
Please answer my questions and give me some pointers and what i should do and what not to do this is my very first time having a turtle so i don’t know much about them.
Also please provide links to the water heaters that you think are good and even if they are pricey put it up i wouldn’t mind spending money on something that i know will help my turtle.
Thanks!
Got EGOR and his setup for free off craigslist. Everything worked out to be around 250$ lights, bulbs, fixtures, calcium powder, multi-vitamins, digital thermometer, 2 food dishes, hut, vines, timer, 40 gal tank, cricket food, log. FREE
He used to eat immediately when I fed him and would just stare at me if I tapped on the glass but now he ignores the food and if I tap on the glass he freaks out and zooms around the aquarium like he’s being chased. He also spends all his time at the bottom of the aquarium and doesn’t seem to want to move. He has a thermometer and the temperature is fine and there is nothing wrong with the air bubbles, either. Any ideas?
The aquarium is 10 gallons. It includes a heater, thermometer, filter, rocks, and fake plants. Also included are replacements for the filter, chemicals to treat the water, fish food, and a couple nets.
