Is there a way to use a regular cooking thermometer in place of a candy thermometer?

I do not have a candy thermometer and have attempted to make vanilla fudge several times (going by dropping a dab of the mixture into cold water to see if it is at soft ball stage) but it never seems to come out quite right. I have a regular cooking thermometer, is there a way i can use that? Or is there another alternative to use in its place? Thanks a million to those who can answer this for me.

  1. versantly says:

it’s perfect as long as it registers temps high enough for your recipe.

You will need to know the temperature you need to get the fudge up to, and if thermometer will go that high.
I think you will be OK, but it is wise to check.
